The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) has donated 10 desktop computers and other accessories to the University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (UNAAB).
President of COREN Alhaji Ahmed Gumel, who presented the computers, said the materials are meant for the institution's Department of Civil Engineering. He said that the donation was part of the council's efforts at supporting the teaching of engineering programmes in tertiary institutions.
Gumel said he was hopeful that the gesture would spur the university to provide more facilities for the department, adding that the donation was the beginning of other planned supports for the institution. He called on stakeholders in education industry to give priority to the faculties of engineering in the universities, saying that "no nation can develop without a deliberate policy to encourage the acquisition of knowledge in engineering." According to him, the quest for infrastructural development can only be achieved, when a robust indigenous engineering capacity is encouraged. He commended the Vice Chancellor of the university Professor Olaiya Balogun and other principal officers for a job well done. Receiving the donation, Professor Balogun reiterated his commitment to nurture the College of Engineering to a model in the country, adding that the computers would be put to the best use to enhance the teaching and learning of engineering in the university.
