Kogi State (Okene)-born Mercy Johnson, who many industry insiders have wrongfully pigeonholed as only fit for emotional roles, has come up to debunk the claim. The curvaceous actress, who stunned multitude of movie buffs with her A-class display in Kill The Bride took it in good fate, then sounded it loud and clear that she could act whatever role that comes her way, whether emotional roles, action roles, bitchy roles, name it, as she is not inflexible in her interpretation of roles. "Those who thought I could only act emotional roles were mistaken. I am a flexible actress. I do action films; I do bitchy roles. It’s not compulsory I do emotional roles; it is just that I carry emotional roles extremely well. Fine, most of my films are emotional films, but I have also done action film.” She further said she would do the lip-locking scenes over and over again if the script requires it. Some of her movies include Last Contact; Last Kiss; My Heart Your Home; Oh! Woman; Kill the Bride; Women in Power, amongst others.
Have you wanted to do something so right and so good, but the time is not just ripe and the necessary tools to accomplish such are not ready. And there is this belief in your heart that if you would wait for as long as close to twenty years you would accomplish such task with much dexterity and less cost and stress. Only belief would drive away the fear of you not being alive to wait this long, amidst other fears.
But this was the case of James Cameron. If you thought Titanic was a fluke, then please, do have a re-think. When he directed Terminator, which was a Box Office hit, many did not really appreciate this man. And then he went on to direct Titanic, which the producers were scared would not be a success because of Water World.
Thumbs up to all the super-fans in the celebrity world, and big-ups to those that value what it is to be a celebrity. Now, before I continue with what is at hand, the way it will baffle you is same way it did with me before I started to do this article.
Many questions I ponder over, and one is;
“Can a Nigerian fan buy any article/accessory of our celebrities for hundreds of thousands?”
Well, that is a question that is opened. You call it a weird world, but I say it is a world that is reciprocal. Indeed, reciprocal. Let me take you back memory lane, and you will understand why Nigerian celebrities are not really appreciated.
The date was October 10th. The venue was Nairobi, Kenya. The event was MTV MAMA Awards 2009.
Nameless (Kenya) and M.I. (Nigeria) were the big winners of the evening; the two artistes took home two trophies each at the pan-African music celebration, held at the Moi International Sports Complex, Kasarani, Kenya.The host was Wyclef Jean of the then Fugees. His entering introduction was unique as he came in from the crowd. He introduced Akon as his younger brother, of course in colour and music I suppose. The Host, Wyclef Jean set the uplifting tone for the evening with an electrifying live set including monster hits ‘Sweetest Girl’, ‘No Woman No Cry‘ and ‘Ready or Not’.
In keeping with the show’s purpose of bringing Africa together, the MAMA awards featured multiple collaborations between artistes from different countries and music genres – mixing up hip hop with R&B, alternative, soul and dancehall, among others. Among the collaborations thrilling the 4,000 strong crowd was a three way tie-up featuring HHP, Brickz and 2Face. And a stunning collaboration between Kenyan divas Amani and Wahu and Tanzania’s A.Y. and a dramatic hip-hop/rock mash-up between Zebra & Giraffe and Da LES.
D’Banj brought home the biggest award for the third time.
The year is almost coming to an end but the blessings seem to be pouring in nonstop for Rita Dominic. Just a few months after she became one of Globacom’s Ambassador, Player Haters are whispering that she has just been elected as the face of Nokia Africa and was paid over one million dollars for a six months contract.
Let’s take a minute to mourn the Kings that have kicked the bucket in the Entertainment Industry. I am talking about The King of Pop (Michael Jackson) and the King of Dirty Dancing movies (Patrick Wayne Swayze, August 18, 1952 – September 14, 2009) who was an American actor, dancer and singer-songwriter.
I was baffled when I saw on the television and heard on the radio stations that our own pride, Tuface Idibia celebrates ten years in music. I asked myself, is it really ten years? I had thought it would be more, but something has to be celebrated. What I appreciate being celebrated is that this young man has done us proud with his talent.
At UNN Nsukka, they are known as Ozioko and Ali. On stage, they are known as Vast and Smash. But, to the fans, they are known as Bracket. After the release of ‘Yori-yori’, they now know they have no choice but to combine academics with entertainment. To them, with academics it is loving loving. With music, it is wellee wellee. Read below to find out if both are ‘Yori-yori’.
Country music superstar Shania Twain will be the next guest judge on American Idol . The country songbird has agreed to join Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi in Chicago. Twain, who knows a few things about selling records, joins Victoria Beckham, Katy Perry and Mary J. Blige (and not Jessica Simpson) among the announced guest judges for the show's upcoming ninth season, which—in case you hadn't heard—will be its first without veteran tastemaker Paula Abdul.
I was listening to a radio programme when a Caller made his contribution and ended by saying ‘Jack Bauer’ after he was asked his name. The Presenter laughed, and I guess he wasn’t the only one laughing. Whoever the caller was, he must have been watching too many seasonal films. But, do you really blame him when that is what is in vogue right about now.
Sometimes in life, some people see others that go into entertainment as jobless, or drop outs from the tertiary institutions. The perception we sometimes have about music is not really the way it is. Artistes and all it takes to make them successful is far from what we imagine, or even see with our naked eyes.
